R3 – Replace, Repair, Regenerate

Organized by Kara McKinley (Harvard), Shruti Naik (NYU) and Mike Longaker (Stanford), this is the sixth in a series of planning workshops that will serve an important role in shaping a 15-lab, 15-year research program at Janelia Research Campus called “4D Cellular Physiology”.

This workshop will focus on clinical and mechanistic paradigms in tissue repair. The capacity to restore cells and structures after injury differs dramatically across tissues and between species. Why can some tissues and organisms recreate structures virtually identical to what was lost, while others fail to repair at all, or seal the damage but remain functionally impaired? Our goal is to define key chokepoints, and forge new frontiers to ultimately advance regenerative medicine in humans. By bringing together biologists, clinicians, and bioengineers working in diverse systems, we aim to foster the cross-pollination of ideas across disciplines.

The virtual format will include ~6 hours of short talks and discussion each day, open to the broad scientific community. Presentations by invited speakers will focus on current challenges in the field and exciting new directions that could lead to transformative advances.
